Why Yoga?

M+BC Philosophy

At Mind + Body Connection, I believe that anyone can do yoga, regardless of age or physical limitations. To me, yoga is so much more than just stretching, toning and sweating. It's a journey to strengthen yourself inside and out! To explore your body, your breath, your mind and your spirit in a whole new way to help you feel more connected and grounded on and off the mat (or chair).

Benefits:

There is an ever-growing body of research evidencing the multiple healing powers of gentle yoga practice for a variety of physical and behavioral health conditions. Yoga does not only help to reduce stress, but can help reduce depression, lessen chronic pain, improve digestion and increase energy levels, to name just a few. It can even help to regulate your central nervous system!

How M+BC is different:

Not all yoga classes are sensitive to the complexities of individual needs. I often hear medical and behavioral health providers encouraging their patients/clients to attend yoga classes. Yet, there are some potential risks at fitness-based yoga studios and classes  that many individuals and providers may not be aware of when they make these suggestions.  My style of yoga is different from the standard yoga fitness classes in many ways because I:

  • Truly understand trauma-sensitivity;
  • Work toward understanding and helping each individual that receives our services;
  • Offer gentle, slow yoga classes that are accessible to most ability levels, including those in wheelchairs;
  • Am free of judgement;
  • Tailor classes to meet the needs of clients, most of which are specific to different aspects of mental health and/or addiction and recovery;
  • Am holistically minded, taking care of all aspects of our clients, not just their physical health.
